These rules may be changed by the vote of members at an AGM or EGM. Where necessary interpretation of the rules will be by the Competition Secretary in agreement with the Committee.
i) All print, slide and A.V. entries must reach the Competition Secretary NOT LESS THAN 24 HOURS before the start of the competition. All digital entries must be sent to the competition secretary NOT LESS THAN 1 WEEK before the date of a digital competition, digital entries may be submitted on CD, USB flash drive or be email to the competition secretary.
ii) Exceptionally entries may be presented NOT LATER THAN 15 minutes before the start of the competition, PROVIDED THAT THE COMPETITION SECRETARY HAS PRIOR NOTICE.
iii)To avoid embarrassment to the Competition Secretary and the Judge no entries will be accepted later than 15 minutes before the published start time of the meeting.
i) SENIOR WORKER
Either :- A member who has gained at least 100 marks from entries receiving seals or scoring 8.5 or over in a particular Primary Category.
Or :- A member who has demonstrated to the Committee the ability to produce consistent work of a high standard.
ii) PRIMARY WORKER
A member who does not yet qualify for SENIOR status in a given category.
iii)An OPEN CLASS is one for which both Primary and Senior workers are eligible.
iv) An image is considered to be MONOCHROME if it (in addition to a straight black and white image) is a toned black and white image with or without different shades OR a black and white image to which partially ONE colour has been added (by toning, filtering, or sticking on other elements, etc).
Except where otherwise stated the following apply:-
i) Primary prints must be at least 35 sq. ins/226 cm2 in area (e.g. 7" x 5"/17.8 cm x 12.7 cm)) excluding the mount.
ii)Prints must be mounted and clearly labelled on the reverse with author’s name & class, and a title or other identifying mark.
iii) Prints must not exceed 20" x 16"/50.8 cm x 40.6 cm including mounts.
iv) Prints may be derived from any photographic process, and may be produced by the author or by a third party, but copyright must be at the disposal of the author
v) Digital Image entries must be derived solely from the author's original work.
i) Slides must be in 2" x 2" mounts with author’s name and title clearly visible.
Note: Due to the variables of digital projection the committee cannot guarantee that all digital images will be projected identically to the intended image, to minimise any variance please ensure you use the colour settings below. It is also advisable to perform monitor calibration, to increase the accuracy of the projected image.
i) Images will be projected at a maximum size of 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high, images do not have to entirely fill these dimensions, i.e. Landscape format images cannot be wider than 1024pixels, Portrait format images cannot be higher than 768 pixels. All entries will be passed through the size checking/re-naming software, to ensure they conform to the projectors compatibility.
ii) Images must be derived from original images which do not infringe copyright. The inclusion of entire or partial elements of clip-art, stock photos or copyright free materials is not permitted.
iii) File format should be either .tiff files with no compression, or .jpg (12)
iv) Images must not contain layers, should be 8 bits/channel and may be in either RGB or Greyscale mode.
v) Colour space should be sRGB, if the colour space is not set to sRGB, the image colours may be projected differently.
vii) The competition secretary must be provided with identifiable files, as well as the title, author, and the primary/senior class of the worker.
vii) In the first year of digital competitions the committee reserves the right to review and amend these digital rules.

ASSESSMENT
i) Each entry is marked out of 10.
ii) To encourage or recognise outstanding work the Judge may, at their discretion, award a ‘Seal of Merit’ for highly commended work.
iii)The committee may also award Seals of Merit in special circumstances.
iv) Entries which receive marks of 9 points or more, or which are awarded a ‘Seal of Merit’, will receive an appropriate label and become eligible for entry in the Night of the year competition.
v) In order to prevent too many or too few entries becoming eligible in a particular competition the Competition Secretary, in consultation with the committee may raise or lower this ‘pass’ mark for the Night of the Year Competion. In this event all members affected will be and invited to select a specified number of entries from their eligible work for the competition
.vi) In the first year of digital competitions all workers will be in the primary category and the committee will review changing worker from primary to senior qualification at the end of the season.
ELIGIBILITY
i) Workers may submit up to 3 entries in the print & slide categories, workers may submit up to 2 entries in the digital category
.ii) Entries which are eligible for the Night of the Year competition are not eligible for further monthly competitions.
iii) No entry will be eligible for more than two monthly competitions.
iv) If a print is made from a slide or digital file, unless significantly different, they will be considered to be the same entry. i.e. It may be entered twice in the same category or once into each of two different categories.
2. Open Print Competition (For the Open Print Trophy)
ASSESSMENT
i) A winner and runner-up will be chosen. The winner will be awarded the Open Print Trophy to hold for one year.
ii) The winning and runner-up entries will be awarded Seals of Merit.
iii)The author of the winning entry, where appropriate, will be credited 10 marks towards Senior status.
iv) The author of the runner-up entry, where appropriate, will be credited 8 marks towards Senior status.
v) Authors who are awarded a Seal of Merit, where appropriate, will be credited 10 marks towards Senior status.
vi) Marks awarded in this competition do not count towards the consistency awards.
vii)Entries that gain a Seal of Merit are eligible for the ‘Night of the Year’ Competition.

3. Open Slide Competition (The Herbie Cox Trophy)
ASSESSMENT
i) A winner and runner-up will be chosen. The winner will be awarded the Herbie Cox Trophy to hold for one year.
ii) The winning and runner-up entries will be awarded Seals of Merit.
iii)The author of the winning entry, where appropriate, will be credited 10 marks towards Senior status.
iv) The author of the runner-up entry, where appropriate, will be credited 8 marks towards Senior status.
v) Authors who receive a Seal of Merit, where appropriate , will be credited 10 marks towards Senior status.
vi) Marks awarded in this competition do not count towards the consistency awards.

iii) The author of the winning entry, where appropriate, will be credited 10 marks towards Senior status.
iv) The author of the runner-up entry, where appropriate, will be credit 8 marks towards Senior status.
v) Authors who receive a Seals of Merit, where appropriate, will be credited 10 marks towards Senior status.
vi) Marks awarded in this competition do not count towards the consistency awards. vii) Entries that gain a Seal of Merit are eligible for the ‘Night of the Year’ Competition.

CATEGORIES
A: Open Print Panel
B: Open Slide Panel
ASSESSMENT
i) A winner and runner-up will be chosen for each category.
ii) The winners will each be awarded a trophy to hold for one year.
iii)The entries will be judged as panels of three and should therefore fit together as a panel either on a theme or telling a story.
iv) If the order of the panel is significant, then the entry must be clearly marked LEFT, CENTRE, RIGHT.
ELIGIBILITY
i) A member may submit up to 3 panels in each category.
ii) Category A prints must be at least 80 sq. Ins/516 cm2 (e.g. 8" x 10"/20.3 cm x 25.4 cm) excluding the mount.
iii)Trade processed prints are not allowed.
iv) Any print or slide that has appeared in any previous panel of 3 competition is ineligible as part of a panel.
6. Audio-Visual Competition (if held)
ASSESSMENT
i) A winner and runner-up sequence will be chosen.
ii) The winner will receive a trophy to hold for one year
.
ELIGIBILITY
7. Most Prolific Worker (The Bill Bessant Print)
ASSESSMENT
i) The winner will be the worker who receives the greatest total of marks from internal competitions held during the season.
ii) The winner will receive the ‘Bill Bessant Print’ to hold for one year.
ELIGIBILITY
i) Actual marks awarded in monthly print and slide competitions
ii)
For competitions where marks are not awarded, (e.g. Open Print, Open Slide, Open Digital, Panel of Three, Audio-Visual). The winner will be credited with 10 points, the runner(s) up will be credited with 8 points and all other entries will be credited 5 points. In the event of a joint winner, the marks will be shared between the entrants.iii)‘Night of the Year’ competitions will not count towards this award
ASSESSMENT
i) A winner and runner-up will be chosen in each class:
Primary Prints (For the W.J. Holt Cup)
Senior Prints (For the Metcalf Trophy)
Primary Slides (For the J. Leisnam Cup)
Senior Slides (For the Premier Colour Award)
Primary Colour Prints (For the Colour Print Trophy)
Senior Colour Prints (For the Colour Print Tankard)
Primary Digital Images (For the Primary Digital Trophy)
ii) Each Class winner will hold the trophy for that class for one year.
ELIGIBILITY
i) All photographs that become eligible during the season will be awarded a ‘Night of The Year sticker’ and may be entered for the ‘Night of the Year’ competition.
ii)Authors will be reminded of eligible work beforehand.
i) Trophies will also be awarded for the most consistent print worker and slide worker during the current season. All marks awarded on any of the Monthly Competitions will count towards the total for the season.
ii)No distinction is made between the Primary and Senior Classes.
i) Trophies will be engraved through the club and at the Society’s expense.
ii) Trophy holders must return trophies promptly when requested.
i) Any queries regarding these rules should be passed to the Competition Secretary or any other committee member.
ii) In case of dispute the decision of the Committee is final.
12. OSPS Panel for External Events
i) Rules regarding the annual SPF Exhibition and SPF League Competition are published in the SPF Handbook, a copy of which is held by the Secretary.
